The history of our school

When the school building was inaugurated on April 28th in 1908, the town Mittweida could already look back to 600 years history. The movement of the Secondary School that had been started in 1869 became necessary because of the industrial revival and with it the growing population. The new institution was only open to boys until 1916. Twelve years later, in 1928, it was a matter of extenting the educational institution, because of the increasing number of students.

After the building and its Secondary School had seen the time of the Empire and the Weimar Republic without being changed, the spirit of the school change in January 1933, when the National Socialists got the power. Still in the same year, the birthday of the Leader was the occasion to name the school "Adolf-Hitler-School". When the war came into Germany, the institution started working in shifts, as all the equipment, staff et cetera had to be shared with pupils from Bremen. Later then, it even was used as a shelter and a hospital.

Only in 1949, teachers and students were allowed to take possession of the building again. Socialism brought two things to the students: work next to the lessons and a new name for the school: " Erich Weinert".

In 1960 then the school became an Extended Secondary School, before in 1982 the last students took their Abitur-exams and the school was changed to a Polytechnical Secondary School. After only ten years, on August 29th, 1992, the Städtisches Gymnasium Mittweida was inaugurated, a result of the German Re-Unification. A year later, another extension to the building was inaugurated and given into the hands of staff and students. Since then about 800 students are learning here each year with their goal to get closer to and finally take the Abitur exams, similar to the A-Levels.
